چکیده

BACKGROUND: Small species of fish and juveniles of larger species occupy aquatic plant patches for food (Pardue 1973; Keast 1984) and protection from predators (Crowder and Cooper 1982; Savino and Stein 1989). Differences in density and morphology of plants influence foraging intensity and degree of predator avoidance (Dionne and Folt 1991; Lillie and Budd 1992; Wychera et al. 1993; Dibble, Killgore, and Dick 1996), which in turn influence fish growth and survival. Foraging efficiency decreases in dense plant beds (Savino and Stein 1982; Anderson 1984), but plant architecture (e.g., interstitial space formed by the arrangement of stems and leaves) can mediate negative effects (Lynch and Johnson 1989; Lillie and Budd 1992; Johnson 1993). High-density plant beds, however, offer greater protection from predators than mediumor low-density beds (Hayse and Wissing 1996). These tradeoffs, between reduced foraging value and increased protection from predators, make assessments of optimal or threshold densities of aquatic plants difficult.

Reef fish foraging associations: “Nuclear-follower” behavior or an ephemeral interaction?

A widespread feeding association among reef fishes involves nuclear and attendant species. The former causes a bottom disturbance attracting several species known as followers, which feed on items exposed by this activity. Herein we propose a novel classification for foraging associations namely “ephemeral foraging association” formerly grouped together as nuclear-follower behavior. For this cl...

Preliminary Study on Time Budget and Foraging Strategy of Wintering Oriental White Stork at Poyang Lake, Jiangxi Province, China

The time budgets, behavior rhythms, foraging habitats and food preferences of oriental white stork Ciconia boyciana were studied from December 2013 to March 2014 with instantaneous scan sampling and focus animal sampling methods at Poyang Lake, Jiangxi province, China. The results showed that the main behavior of oriental white stork were resting (40.07±3.21%) and foraging (35.44±2.42%), follow...

Handed Foraging Behavior in Scale-Eating Cichlid Fish: Its Potential Role in Shaping Morphological Asymmetry

Scale-eating cichlid fish, Perissodus microlepis, from Lake Tanganyika display handed (lateralized) foraging behavior, where an asymmetric 'left' mouth morph preferentially feeds on the scales of the right side of its victim fish and a 'right' morph bites the scales of the left side. This species has therefore become a textbook example of the astonishing degree of ecological specialization and ...

Morphology and Efficiency of a Specialized Foraging Behavior, Sediment Sifting, in Neotropical Cichlid Fishes

Understanding of relationships between morphology and ecological performance can help to reveal how natural selection drives biological diversification. We investigate relationships between feeding behavior, foraging performance and morphology within a diverse group of teleost fishes, and examine the extent to which associations can be explained by evolutionary relatedness. Morphological adapta...

Dimethylsulfoniopropionate as a foraging cue for reef fishes.

Coral reefs resemble islands of productive habitats where fishes aggregate, forage, and spawn. Although it has been suggested that some reef fishes use biogenic chemicals as aggregation cues, specific chemicals have not been identified. Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), a secondary metabolite of many marine algal species, is released during foraging by higher-order consumers. DMSP has been stu...

Fine-scale spatial patterns of parrotfish herbivory are shaped by resource availability

Herbivory by fishes and sea urchins is a powerful mechanism on coral reefs that mitigates coral−algal competition by physically removing algae and creating bare space. Spatially constrained grazing by herbivores, particularly parrotfishes, may foster coral recruitment by creating a spatially continuous refuge of bare substrate for settlement and survival. However, frequent bouts of concentrated...
